✨You Only Want the World — A Song That Wrote Itself
This morning, before I even opened my eyes, the words started flowing. I was humming a melody as I woke up, still half asleep. I reached for my phone and began typing into my Notes app, eyes still shut, barely awake—almost like I was recording a dream.
The words haunted me all day. I couldn’t shake them, though work and errands kept me from doing anything about it. Finally, around 8pm tonight, I sat down and gave them the time they had been asking for. I refined the lyrics only slightly—most of them arrived fully formed—and I began composing the song to match the sounds I had been hearing in my head all day.
As usual, I turned to Canva to craft a visual mood for the piece, creating a simple video that could hold the space the music needed. And when I played it back for the first time... I burst into tears. Real. Ugly. Tears.
I’ve never cried at my own poetry before—at least, not like this. This stirred something raw and deep inside me. It's as if this song didn’t just come from me, but through me.
✨ You Only Want the World
An original song and video by Michelle Ried
A quiet ache. An incomplete bond. A love that gives but is never fully received.
"You Only Want the World" is a haunting and intimate ballad exploring the space between being needed and being truly loved. It weaves through themes of emotional distance, longing, and the quiet unraveling of connection in a relationship. Flowing through the breaking, this is about a love that used to be illuminated and bright but has been left dark by other ambitions or interests that eclipse intimacy and abandons connection. This is a falling out of love song.
With lyrics like “Thank God, you need me / Wish you could love me,” this piece reflects the quiet grief of someone who held on to hope while slowly slipping away from a once-deep love.
If this song speaks to you, I hope it offers you comfort in your own journey. And if it hurts in that way only truth can—I’m sorry. I’ve been there too.

You Only Want the World By Michelle Ried Everybody needs me. If they didn’t need me— I’d be lonely, I’d be so all alone. Thank God, you need me. Wish you could love me But I’m not that lucky. Wish you could want me But you only want the world. Your silence is deafening. Swept away under waves, Muted with underwater tones. I’m crashing out, losing control. Waiting for the moment to subside— When your spirit decides To come back home. Thank God, you need me. Wish you could love me But I’m not that lucky. Wish you could want me But you only want the world. You only want the world. You only want the world. Holding my breath. between pauses. My impulse is to run. But I need you too. As much as. I’ve ever needed anyone. You’re a warm lantern, Illuminating the sky from afar. Calling spirits, guiding. Helping them to find their star. We built a life here. Yet I wait here freezing, never receiving your returned warmth. Our vows are echoes. Slipping now as memories fading. Thank God, you need me. Wish you could love me But I’m not that lucky. Wish you could want me But you only want the world. Thank God, you need me. Wish you could love me. (Wish you could love me.) Thank God, you need me. Wish you could want me. But you only want the world. (But you only want the world.) Ohhhh… But you only want the world. You only want the world.
